Lakeland’s Vision for Future Growth: A Thriving Community on the Rise
Buckle up, Lakeland! The suburban landscape is poised for a remarkable transformation with a wave of residential and commercial expansion set to sweep through our city in the years ahead. But fear not, because we’re not just sitting back and watching it happen – we’re actively planning and strategizing for this explosive growth.
In a landmark joint session held on Thursday, Feb. 29, the Board of Commissioners and Municipal Planning Commission unveiled two comprehensive, long-term strategic development plans that will shape the future of Lakeland. The excitement was palpable as both governing bodies unanimously endorsed these visionary plans, signaling a unified commitment to steer our city towards a prosperous and sustainable future.
Mayor Josh Roman, beaming with optimism, expressed his hopes for the city’s future: “I hope we as a city can maintain this planned path to see our city built out in this highly desirable way over the next 20 to 30 years. With term limits, this vision needs to be shared over multiple administrations, requiring leaders to put this plan ahead of sometimes their own agenda. My fingers are crossed.”
At the heart of these plans is the PULSE (Preserve Unify Live Strategize Educate) Comprehensive Plan 2024, a culmination of months of meticulous work by Kimley-Horn and Associates in collaboration with city staff. This visionary document, shaped by extensive community input, redefines Lakeland’s development trajectory while staying true to its roots. As Paul Luker, Lakeland’s planning director, emphasized, the PULSE plan serves as a guiding light for the city’s growth, ensuring a harmonious blend of progress and preservation.
One notable aspect of the PULSE plan is its commitment to maintaining the northern part of the city’s rural character, a sentiment echoed by Commissioner Jim Atkinson: “The plan looks great. It’s really well done… very similar to the one that was adopted in 2006 but with a whole lot more detail.”
But it’s not just about envisioning the future; it’s also about laying the groundwork to make it a reality. Enter the city’s transportation plan, meticulously crafted by Kimley-Horn to address the evolving needs of a growing community. From identifying potential interchange sites to planning for road expansions and roundabouts, every detail has been scrutinized to ensure seamless mobility and alleviate congestion.
Doug Swett, a Kimley-Horn engineer, highlighted the importance of a proposed interchange at Chambers Chapel on Interstate 40, emphasizing its potential to enhance accessibility and ease traffic woes on Canada Road. However, he cautioned that such ambitious projects could take upwards of 15-20 years to materialize.
Speaking candidly about the challenges ahead, Swett acknowledged the looming specter of Ford’s BlueOval City and its potential impact on Lakeland’s landscape. Yet, amidst these concerns, he remains optimistic, buoyed by the abundance of funding opportunities available to support our city’s growth.
