Every year, the Germantown Municipal School District marks the start of the academic year with an exuberant celebration, akin to a pep rally, dedicated to its dedicated staff members. In previous years, these celebrations have embraced themes such as “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” fostering a sense of belonging that shapes the upcoming year’s journey.
This year, on Friday, August 4th, the school staff was introduced to the district’s overarching concept for the 2023-24 academic term: “GMSD in focus,” an idea paired with a delightful groovy atmosphere. To the tune of The Beatles’ iconic melodies, played by the local band The Soul Shockers, each school staff made their entrance, waving pompoms, chanting enthusiastic cheers, and dancing with anticipation as they prepared to welcome another promising year.
Superintendent Jason Manuel, in his address to the staff, drew inspiration from The Beatles’ story. He noted the band’s immense success but highlighted their underlying dissatisfaction, which prompted them to delve into introspection and compose songs that revolved around people finding their true purpose. He drew a parallel to the educators’ journey, indicating that many of them are on a quest for meaning and significance. Manuel emphasized that within their roles and collaborations, there are instances when they genuinely make a difference.
He encouraged the educators to uncover their individual talents, passions, and the ways in which they positively impact their students’ lives. Manuel contended that the amalgamation of these three elements generates a transformative moment he likened to the shift from black-and-white to technicolor in “The Wizard of Oz,” capturing the essence of discovering one’s purpose and focus.
This realization of purpose would differ for each employee, given their distinct skills and talents. Manuel acknowledged that external conflicts and personal challenges might occasionally attempt to undermine their focus and joy. In such trying times, he reminded them to remember their focal point, their deeper calling, and the core of their responsibilities.
He urged the staff to stand by each other during challenges, emphasizing that their shared purpose is to aid children in realizing their full potential. He asserted, “We have our collective focus. We share the common mission of nurturing children to reach their highest capabilities. And through this, we possess the capacity to effect significant change in the world by shaping the lives of these young minds.”
The Houston High Auditorium buzzed with energy as educators and administrators from various Germantown schools congregated for this celebratory event. Teachers partook in contests, and Superintendent Manuel stepped into the role of a game show host. Prizes for the games ranged from floral arrangements and virtual reality goggles to an air fryer and even a vacation package. The teachers engaged in district-related trivia questions, and some principals and teachers showcased their vocal talents in a spirited karaoke competition.
Throughout the two-hour event, the schools engaged in friendly competitions, with the staff displaying remarkable school spirit. Ultimately, Houston Middle School clinched the coveted $10,000 prize from sponsors Kent Ritchey and Landers Ford to renovate the teacher lounge. However, Superintendent Manuel surprised the staff of Houston High by announcing that their teacher lounge would also undergo an upgrade, underscoring his commitment to recognizing and uplifting all educators within the district.
