Fresh out of high school and set to embark on college and career, Jake Stoope already has a national recognition on his resume.

Stoope, who graduated from Arlington High earlier this month, received the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Jim McKay Memorial Scholarship Award last Monday night, May 22, at the 44th Annual Sports Emmy Awards.

The McKay Award is a $10,000 scholarship for a student pursuing a career in sports television and is named for McKay, a sports journalist who died in 2008. Stoope was the only high school student to win an award at Monday’s event, held at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in New York City.

“It’s so surreal to think about all the hard work in the last few years and seeing it not only pay off … but to also see other people recognize it and then Arlington get the recognition it deserves,” Stoope said.

Stoope submitted two essays along with a 12-minute reel of highlights from the different types of broadcasting he has done. The submissions included live streams covering various sports for AHS, documentary work, and his “Men in Hoodies” sports-related YouTube podcast.

He received an all-expenses paid trip to New York for the ceremony and to accept the award given to one high school senior who shows remarkable sports journalism skills and plans to pursue a career in the field.
