Rise and Roll: Germantown’s Culinary Fusion with Rock N’ Roll Sushi
The team behind Germantown’s Rise Southern Biscuits and Righteous Chicken has expanded its culinary ventures by acquiring Rock N’ Roll Sushi. Following a brief closure for renovations, the Germantown Rock N’ Roll Sushi reopened on November 10, now under shared ownership with Rise.
Spencer Burgon, owner of Rise, shared the collaboration story, explaining that the idea emerged during a conversation with local construction business owner Lon McDurmon, unrelated to the restaurant industry. The partnership with McDurmon presented an opportunity to join forces for Rock N’ Roll Sushi.
The Germantown Rock N’ Roll Sushi, located at Forest Hill Irene Road and Poplar Avenue, underwent renovations to align with corporate standards. The revamped aesthetic is described as “super swanky,” featuring crushed velvet and guitars adorning the walls, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a concert venue.
Burgon, McDurmon, and an anonymous third partner, with significant experience in the restaurant industry, are collectively steering Rock N’ Roll Sushi. Burgon emphasized that the sushi joint serves as a “great gap-bridger” for those unfamiliar with sushi, offering unique items such as deep-fried rolls. The menu includes “Americanized” dishes like tempura-battered jalapeno poppers, and each item is named after musical references.
Renovations at the Germantown location started on November 5, with the reopening on November 10. The Wolfchase location is set for renovations in a few weeks, aiming for a reopening around the first of December. Daily specials will be featured at each location during the week after reopening.
Burgon expressed excitement about the concept of Rock N’ Roll Sushi, describing it as a fusion of “rock ‘n’ roll meets almost-jazz-lounge feel.” While expansion plans within the Memphis and North Mississippi area are under consideration, the group emphasizes that the remodel is not just about improving the food but enhancing the overall customer experience through an expanded kitchen and a fresh, new look.
Rock N’ Roll Sushi operates from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. The group looks forward to further success in the Memphis area, celebrating the well-received menu and anticipating an elevated dining experience for their patrons.
