The city recently sealed the deal on acquiring the property, and demolition is set to kick off by the end of March. City Manager Michael Walker shared, “We’re wasting no time in filing for a demolition permit. Once approved, the wrecking crew will swiftly turn the old motel into rubble, clearing the path for a brighter future.”
But this isn’t just about removing an eyesore; it’s about paving the way for progress. Commissioner and Vice Mayor Wesley Wright highlighted the possibilities this opens up, emphasizing the importance of avoiding condemnation to explore diverse options for the property’s future use.

But that’s not all that’s happening in Lakeland! The city’s proactive approach to redevelopment doesn’t stop here. Just last November, the city condemned and demolished the nearby Econo Lodge at 9822 Huff N Puff Road, signaling a commitment to revitalizing areas facing similar challenges.
“We’ve already seen the improvement from the Econo Lodge being demolished as far as safety and security. Crime has dropped,” Wright said, reflecting on the positive impact the removal of such establishments can have on the community.
And the momentum doesn’t end with demolitions. Lakeland has big plans for its future, including the development of the $20 million Lakeland Community Center, set to transform the former Econo Lodge site into a hub of activity and engagement for residents of all ages.
Once the Relax Inn is razed, the only hotel remaining in the suburb will be the Super 8 by Wyndham at 9779 Huff N Puff Road. However, Lakeland’s growth doesn’t stop there. Several new hotels are in the works near the Interstate 40-Canada Road junction, including projects within the expansive 160-acre The Lake District and the 100-acre Ashmont mixed-use development.
