Topgolf is headed to Shelby County.
The Memphis and Shelby County Land Use Control Board unanimously recommended approval of a Topgolf off Callis-Cutoff Road near the Memphis-Germantown border Thursday morning.
The 20-acre site is part of a larger mixed-use development that stretches across Germantown Road, slightly north of Winchester Road. The development’s outline plan was approved two decades ago, although amended some since then.
“We are very excited to be introducing some development in this area of the city, the area of Polo Grounds North that has kind of been leapfrogged over the years,” Josh Whitehead, an attorney representing the applicant, said.
Prior to Thursday, no one would officially link Topgolf to the application. However, Todd Waldo, Topgolf’s director of real estate development from Dallas, presented the various aspects of the proposal. From golf-related games, 72 high-tech hitting bays and a full-service restaurant and bar with a patio and rooftop terrace, he wanted to make sure the board understood the various services. The site will also have event space and include mini-golf.
Commercial is allowed on the site under the current zoning. A few outparcels separate from the entertainment facility were part of the proposal reviewed Thursday. However, the discussion centered on Topgolf. Waldo said the building will have a contemporary design uniquely different from traditional retail.
No opposition was present at the meeting.
“I’m a golfer and this is a wonderful thing for Memphis, and I would encourage support of this,” Darrell Thomas told his fellow board members, noting it’s an asset for the community.
For about a month, there were hints that Topgolf was focusing on the site north of Tenn. 385/ Bill Morris Parkway and east of Germantown Road. But despite the applications and other evidence, the Dallas-based company would only tweet that it had nothing to announce at the time, but Memphians should stay tuned.
